A pram walking group provides the ideal exercise for new parents. It can easily “slot in” between existing family obligations. It can overcome the usual barriers of lack of time, cost, childcare and lack of confidence. Walking in groups can be enjoyable and sociable; reducing isolation and helping parents develop support networks within their community.


Psychological Benefits

Regular walking can reduce depression and increase self-esteem. Recent research indicates that pram walking groups in particular can be recommended as a preventative measure for new mothers to reduce their risk of postnatal stress and depression. Mothers revealed that they felt better about themselves due to:

  • being able to focus on something to motivate them to “get up and go”

  • having time out of the house which tended to be a source of stress

  • feeling that they were doing some exercise that would make them fitter

  • meeting other mothers and not feeling so alone in being able to discuss the daily situations they faced in the care of their babies

  • the program assisting them with weightloss

  • the walking groups providing a good outlet

  • the opportunity to get advice from other new mothers in the same situation

  • having the opportunity to exercise in an environment where everyone is friendly and has the same interests

  • being able to get out and do exercise with the baby.


Physical Benefits

The physical benefits of a regular walking program include increased fitness, weight loss and improved body composition, lower cholesterol, improved bone mass density and reduced blood pressure. The long-term benefits can include prevention of osteoporosis and reduced risk of heart disease.

The accessibility and enjoyment of pram walking also ensures a lower dropout rate than other exercise programs.


Pram Walking Leaders

During a pram walk leaders do the following:


  • Bring a first aid kit, water, sunscreen, mobile phone.

  • Bring Pram Walking Group Folder.

  • Introduce themselves to new walkers and all walkers to each other.

  • Get first-timers to complete a Child Health Association Tasmania membership online and a Pre-Activity Questionnaire (for insurance purposes) online or paper.

  • Ensure all have a drink, sunscreen and hats on, babies strapped in.

  • Ask if any are feeling superfit/lacking energy. Explain any route changes.

  • Warm up. 5-10 minutes walking at an easy pace.

  • Stretching. Pram brakes on! 5-10 minutes stretching. No bouncing, hold each stretch 10-20 seconds and do each twice. Have drink. Check babies are strapped in.

  • Walk briskly for approximately 30 minutes. Participants to stay on path, cross at lights where possible or you act as a “lollipop lady”. Have faster walkers take side street detours then rejoin group.

  • Cool down. 5-10 minutes strolling pace.

  • Stretching. Pram brakes on!

  • Give any handouts.

  • Thank participants for coming and confirm day, time and location of the next walk.

  • Tell walkers the pram walking session is officially over but they are welcome to continue socialising.

  • Fill in the Walk and Incident Report online.
